As a designer, my experience reviewing games like Minecraft and Catan has been invaluable in shaping the direction of our tabletop game project, "Elemental Odyssey." It has not only provided insight into the diverse aspects of playful experiences but has also inspired us to think creatively and critically about our own game.

Minecraft, with its sandbox world-building and exploration mechanics, highlighted the significance of player creativity and freedom in crafting captivating gaming experiences. This reminded us of the importance of allowing players to have agency in shaping the game world within "Elemental Odyssey," providing them with tools and opportunities for creativity. Minecraft's ability to foster a sense of ownership and personalization encouraged us to consider how to let players leave their mark on our tabletop game world.

On the other hand, the review of Catan, a classic strategy board game, emphasized the value of resource management and player interaction in gameplay. It reminded us that a successful tabletop game relies on well-balanced mechanics, clear rules, and strategic decision-making. Catan's reputation as a gateway game for newcomers to the tabletop gaming world showed us the importance of accessibility and approachability for players, leading us to contemplate how to make "Elemental Odyssey" easy to pick up while offering depth for strategic thinkers.

These exercises helped our group brainstorm ideas for our tabletop game by sparking discussions about its core elements. We were inspired to create a game that encouraged player creativity and allowed them to shape the game world, much like Minecraft. Additionally, we aimed to strike a balance between accessible gameplay and strategic depth, drawing from Catan's example to ensure that our game would be enjoyable for both newcomers and experienced gamers. Moreover, these exercises encouraged us to think about ways to make each playthrough of "Elemental Odyssey" unique and engaging, much like the replayability found in Minecraft.

In summary, reviewing games like Minecraft and Catan as both a designer/creator and a player has provided valuable lessons and inspiration for the development of "Elemental Odyssey." It has made us aware of the critical aspects of playful experiences, such as player creativity, freedom, balance, accessibility, and replayability, all of which are fundamental in creating a tabletop game that will captivate and delight our future players.
